Bass Guitar Essential Accessories
Picking out my very first bass guitar was an exciting event. It is the first instrument I have ever purchased that I plan on learning how to play. Why not learn Acoustic/Electric guitar first? Well, I have a love for the bass and not only that, I have been told on many occasions that is easier to learn than the Acoustic/Electric guitar. With all of the excitement of my purchase, I decided to make sure I have all of the essentials I needed for my new bass guitar.
Below are accessories that you may want to include if you are looking to purchase a new or second-hand bass guitar as well.
Bass Guitar Cases
The first thing you will want to do is protect your bass investment. This requires a sturdy bass guitar case. Cases come in various styles and materials. The lower-end cases are very thin and don’t offer much protection if you plan on toting your bass around town. There are sturdier cases which are moulded and padded on the inside. These cases have a hard shell and the padding keeps the bass secure. I’d highly recommend a moulded case if you will be doing a lot of travelling.
Extra Bass Strings
Bass guitar strings are relatively sturdy but it doesn’t hurt to keep some spare strings handy. There are several types of bass strings available –
- Round Wound – the most common type, have ridges on the winding.
- Half Round – have been ground down to give a smoother feel, warm tone.
- Flat Wound – reduce finger noise, are smooth to the touch, and have a warm, mellow sound.
Bass Guitar Straps
Depending on the bass you purchase, it may already come with a strap included. Of course, there are various types of straps to choose from as well. The most popular guitar straps are usually made of leather or suede. Many are often woven and come in a variety of colours to suit your tastes. If you’re not into the fancy straps, you can always choose between vinyl and polyester.
Extra Guitar Picks
Out of all of the accessories you can have for your bass, the pick comes in more styles than anything else. You can choose from hundreds of colours as well as the thickness of the pick. Having multiple guitar picks always comes in handy.
The pick is not as necessary accessory as the others as you can play the bass without a pick.
Guitar Tuner
Keeping your bass in tune is a must and there are various types of guitar tuners available on the market. They all range in price from lower end tuners at $10 up to high-end versions that go for $100 or more. If you’re a beginner, it’s probably safe to stick to a low-end model until you become better at playing the bass.
Bass Guitar Amplifier
A bass guitar amplifier is a device that amplifies the electrical signal from a bass guitar so that it can produce sound through a loudspeaker. Bass guitar amplifiers are different from other types of guitar amplifiers, such as electric guitar amplifiers, because they need to reproduce lower frequencies and higher sound pressure levels.
Bass guitar amplifiers typically have a preamplifier section, which allows the player to adjust the tone and volume of the signal, and a power amplifier section, which delivers the amplified signal to the speaker. Some bass guitar amplifiers also have an effects loop, which enables the player to use external effects pedals or processors, and an equalizer, which allows the player to fine-tune the frequency response of the amplifier.
Bass guitar amplifiers come in various sizes and shapes, ranging from small practice amps that can be used at home or in small venues, to large stack amps that can fill large stadiums with powerful sound. Bass guitar amplifiers are an essential part of any bassist’s gear, as they affect the tone, dynamics and feel of the instrument.
Bass Guitar Stand
A bass guitar stand is a device that holds a bass guitar upright when it is not in use. It can prevent damage to the instrument, save space, and provide easy access for the musician. There are different types of bass guitar stands, such as A-frame, tripod, wall-mounted, and multi-guitar stands. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the size, shape, and number of bass guitars to be stored.
Some factors to consider when choosing a bass guitar stand are stability, durability, portability, compatibility, and price. A bass guitar stand should be stable enough to support the weight and balance of the bass guitar without tipping over. It should also be durable enough to withstand frequent use and transport.
A portable bass guitar stand should be easy to fold and carry, while a wall-mounted or multi-guitar stand should be securely attached to the wall or floor. A compatible bass guitar stand should fit the body and neck of the bass guitar without causing scratches or dents. Finally, a bass guitar stand should be affordable and offer good value for money.
