What is Hulusi?

The cucurbit flute, the Chinese name “Hulusi”, is a kind of national musical instrument in Yunnan province, China. Because of its unique beautiful timbre, classic appearance, mellow and elegant sound, and ease to learn, is loved by a number of music lovers.

The cucurbit flute belongs to a kind of reed pipe musical instrument, it is composed of a gourd and two (or three) bamboo tubes, the upper part of the gourd is a blown mouth, the three bamboo tubes connected with a gourd is a sound tube, among them, the longest and thickest one in the middle is the main sound tube, there are six finger holes on the front side, another hole (the seventh fingering hole) on the backside of the main sound tube. There is also a sound hole and two lacing holes on the bottom of the backside.

The vice sound tube is installed with a reed without a fingering hole, therefore the vice tube is inserted into the left or right side of the main tube, in the playing, take out the cork in the bottom of the vice tube, and the vice tube will make a sound with the main tube together, but the vice tube can only make one tune. When playing, if the main tube and vice tube are opened together, 3 tubes make the sound together, but the melody is only from the main tube, the vice tube only makes the harmony effect with single-tone which will make the sound dimly beautiful.

Hulusi is often used to play folk songs, most suitable for playing music or dance music with smooth melody, generally long- tones are more, and combination tone is rich, the music more beautiful and harmonious, and can better express the thoughts and feelings of the players.
